Research Development Manager
We are seeking a collaborative team member to partner with faculty and staff at the University of Wisconsin – System regional campuses and lead the strategy and initiatives that support building capacity for research and scholarly activities in collaboration with the campus Sponsored Programs offices.
The WiSys Research Development (RD) Manager enables WiSys’ mission by identifying new research funding opportunities, counseling faculty and staff on proposal preparation, and providing programs to help with grant seeking. In addition to overseeing the department, the Manager of RD will act as the WiSys Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR) for WiSys grants. In 2023, a WiSys-led coalition won a prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) Engines Development Award (https://www.wisys.org/news-media/wisys-led-partnership-wins-1-million-nsf-grant-to-make-wisconsin-a-global-leader-in-sustainable-ag). This position will assist WiSys in managing the lifecycle of this award, a follow-on Engine grant submission, and other grants from proposal submission and award to post-award administration.
This role has the following key responsibilities:
• Provide strategic input into the evaluation of existing and new programs to support grant seeking activities aligned with institution and faculty needs and WiSys’ mission.
• Promote and recruit participants from partner campuses for various RD programs which may include in-person and virtual research development seminars, workshops, and guidance materials to train faculty in grant writing.
• Develop contacts with relevant funding agencies and identify collaborative funding opportunities. Coordinate multi-institution proposals led by WiSys or other campuses.
• Execute activities related to WiSys proposal submission, contract negotiation, and award setup for federal and state grants. Work in collaboration with WiSys’ finance group to establish and maintain a federally negotiated indirect cost (IDC) rate for WiSys grant submissions.
• Serve as an internal resource for WiSys on research administration operational policies and procedures including financial, administrative, staffing, and compliance.

• Prioritize and manage projects including taking initiative and working collaborating to solve problems and resolve concerns
Qualifications & Requirements
You’ll be off to a great start if you demonstrate:
• Experience with both pre- and post-award research administration activities, ideally at least three years of experience in pre-award, research administration, and/or in the public service/non-profit sector, working on grants. Experience with instruction or training considered a plus
• Familiarity with federal granting agency policies and procedures, including research compliance requirements such as IRB review and conflict of interest matters
• Familiarity with university accounting policies and procedures, including purchasing, travel, reimbursements, and cost transfers
• Experience with proposal submission and award management guidelines set forth by federal funding agencies (particularly, NSF)
• Proven ability to communicate and build rapport with university administrators and faculty
• Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills and presentations skills
• Accountability to follow through on commitments, strong organizational and project management skills, and ability to manage sensitive and financial information with confidentiality
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail and knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), Adobe Acrobat, web and electronic communications technologies
• Bachelor’s degree with advance degree preferred
