The McGuire VA Medical Center Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Service provides examination, diagnosis, treatment, and management of non-operative musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions. Chiropractors are licensed independent providers who work as part of VA interdisciplinary teams including physical medicine and rehabilitation, primary care, pain management, other relevant medical and surgical specialties, and other relevant associated health disciplines.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
In addition to observance of Federal national and local regulatory, policy, and accreditation requirements governing this facility, this position encompasses the following examples of responsibilities:
A. Clinical Duties: The exact privileges and procedures for a particular provider will be approved by the Professional Standards Board. All chiropractors must provide the following:
1. Patient Care: Chiropractors are expected to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, treatment of disease, and care at the end of life. Chiropractors utilize chiropractic manipulation (adjustment) to restore joint and related soft tissue function. The treatment may be provided in combination with other forms of treatment. Performs inpatient and outpatient musculoskeletal and neuromuscular examinations, determines diagnoses, and initiates treatments that emphasize restoration of function.
2. Medical/Clinical Knowledge: Chiropractors are expected to demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical and social sciences, and the application of their knowledge to patient care and the education of others. The chiropractic approach to health care is holistic, stressing the patient's overall well-being. The natural, drugless, non-surgical methods of chiropractic treatment rely on the body's inherent recuperative abilities to promote healing.
3. Clinical Judgment: To ensure practice-based learning and improvement, chiropractors are expected to be able to use scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care.
4. Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Chiropractors are expected to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team.
5. Professionalism: Chiropractors are expected to demonstrate behaviors that reflect a commitment to continuous professional development, ethical practice, understanding and sensitivity to diversity, and a responsible attitude toward their patients and their profession.
6. Systems-Based Practice: Chiropractors are expected to demonstrate both an understanding of the contexts and systems in which health care is provided, and the ability to apply this knowledge to improve and optimize health care.
B. Education
1. Chiropractors are expected to show effectiveness in teaching, to monitor and coordinate educational activities, and to comply with necessary trainee supervision.
C. Administrative Responsibilities
1. Participates in various hospital committees, departmental and hospital in-service programs and education programs of the department and the hospital. Involved in -continuous quality improvement through peer review process.
2. Receives and triages all chiropractic consults within 2 days of receipt and ensures that patients are scheduled within 7 days from receipt of consults.
3. Adheres to VHA Directives regarding the administration of chiropractic treatment to Veterans.
Supervisory Controls
The incumbent reports to the Medical Director, Outpatient Rehabilitation Services/Integrative Health Director. Direction and leadership is provided by the Medical Director with general oversight provided by the Chief of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
Customer Service Requirements
The incumbent meets the needs of customers while supporting the VHA and HHMVAMC missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (patients, visitors, volunteers, and all Medical Center staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
Age, Development, and Cultural Needs of Patients Requirement
The focus of this position is on the provision of chiropractic services to Veterans and other eligible patients at the HHMVAMC. These Veterans/patients ranging from adult to geriatric, having a variety of disabilities. This position requires the incumbent to possess or develop an understanding of the individual needs of these types of patients. Sensitivity to the special needs of all patients with respect to age, developmental impairments, and culturally related factors must be consistently achieved.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:30pm
