The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) GS-05 is the full performance level. The CNA has current State certification and shall have completed the required education and experience. The CNA is responsible for providing direction nursing care to the patients assigned to her/him. This CNA is responsible to and directly supervised by a professional nurse (LPN/RN).
Each CNA will be familiar with the scope of practice for CNAs of the state, territory or commonwealth in which she/he is certified; and under the supervision of a nurse will function within the scope of that practice and at her/his grade level according to VA Kansas City VAMC (KCVAMC) policies and procedures. CNAs at this grade level function as a member of the nursing care team and assist licensed nursing staff in the care of Veterans. The distinguishing factor for this grade involved more complex nursing procedures which can vary within a range of requirements. CNAs at this level also assume more of a peer education/mentorship role.

The Medical/Surgical Units (8W, 8E, 5W) includes cardiac monitoring availability by telemetry; special services particular to this unit include care of patients with the following diagnoses: COPD, Complications of Diabetes, Neurological Disorders, Renal Hemodialysis, Cardiac Disorders, and Cancer - Hospice/Palliative/Chemotherapy administration and surgical sub-specialties: General Surgery, Vascular/Thoracic Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology, ENT, and Neurosurgery. Significant subgroups of patients are under the care of Plastic Surgery, Ophthalmology, and Oral Surgery Special services particular to this unit include care of patients with the following diagnoses: Post-operative management, Bladder irrigations, CPM machines, PCAs, and Chest tubes. Care is provided to a diverse group of patients with medical diagnoses.
The Critical Care Units (MICU, SICU, PCU) manage acutely ill patients who may require ventilatory assistance and hemodynamic monitoring and/or continuous monitor of patient's cardiovascular status.
The ED provides urgent and/or emergent assessment, care and education provided in a ten-bed, level III Emergency Room. The Emergency Room is staffed 24 hours-a-day commensurate with the needs of the patient population served. The care provided is most often for unscheduled patients..
The Float Pool provides support to our inpatient units, which include Intensive Care, Emergency Department, Medical/Surgical and Mental Health. Care is provided to a diverse group of patients with medical diagnoses.
